How In-Browser WAV to MP3 Audio Encoding Works

ZapPebble converts audio tracks directly inside your browser without uploading heavy media files to external cloud transcoding servers. The tool uses your browser native Web Audio API (AudioContext.decodeAudioData()) to decode compressed audio frames into raw Float32 pulse-code modulation (PCM) audio samples. It then encodes the PCM stream into an MP3 byte stream using a client-side WebAssembly build of the LAME encoder (@breezystack/lamejs).

Audio ParameterSupported ValuesTechnical Details
Input FormatsMP3, WAV, AAC, M4A, OGG, FLACDecoded using browser native hardware audio codecs; up to 300 MB per file.
Sample Rates44.1 kHz (CD), 48 kHz (Video), 22.05 kHz, 16 kHz44.1 kHz is standard for music; 16 kHz or 22.05 kHz reduces file size for voice memos.
Channel ConfigurationStereo (2 channels) or Mono (1 channel)Mono cuts uncompressed audio data size by 50% for speech recordings.
Bitrate Options128, 192, 256, 320 kbps CBR192 kbps is transparent for most listeners; 320 kbps offers studio fidelity.

Practical Example: Compressing Studio Master Recordings

The Scenario

You recorded a 5-minute musical track session.wav weighing 52 MB. You need to email it to a collaborator whose email client limits attachments to 15 MB.

Settings: Channels = Stereo · Sample Rate = 44,100 Hz · Bitrate = 192 kbps.
Transcoding Result
  • The file is decoded in browser RAM with real-time progress tracking.
  • The resulting MP3 weighs only 7.1 MB (86% reduction) while preserving full acoustic frequency range.
  • Direct download triggers immediately without server queuing or conversion wait times.

Important Audio Considerations & Memory Limits

Uncompressed WAV Size

Uncompressed 44.1 kHz 16-bit stereo WAV audio consumes ~10 MB per minute. Converting long multi-hour recordings to WAV requires sufficient device RAM.

Batch Transcoding & ZIP

You can drop multiple voice memos or tracks at once. ZapPebble processes them in sequence and bundles all converted files into an uncompressed ZIP archive.

Audio Privacy

Confidential interview recordings, musical demos, and private voice messages are processed exclusively inside your browser's Web Audio memory buffer. Zero audio bytes are uploaded.

Frequently Asked Questions
