How PDF to Image Rendering Works Locally

ZapPebble extracts raster images from your PDF pages using an in-browser WebAssembly build of Mozilla's pdfjs-dist library. Each PDF page vector instructions, embedded fonts, and graphics are drawn to an offscreen HTML5 Canvas surface and encoded as high-fidelity JPG or PNG files without transmitting any document bytes to an external server.

FeatureConfiguration OptionsGuidance & Notes
DPI Rendering Scales100 DPI, 150 DPI, 300 DPI150 DPI is balanced for screen reading; 300 DPI is required for crisp text printing.
Output FormatJPEG (lossy), PNG (lossless)JPEG yields smaller file sizes for photos; PNG preserves razor-sharp text and line art.
Selective Page Rangese.g. "1-3, 5, 8-"Supports individual pages, closed hyphenated ranges, and open-ended ranges to end of document.
File Size CeilingUp to 100 MB per PDFProcessed entirely in browser memory without server timeouts.

Practical Example: Extracting Presentation Slides for Social Sharing

Input Document

You have a 24-page company keynote PDF named annual-presentation.pdf (18 MB). You only need the title slide (page 1) and key revenue infographic (page 4) to share on social media.

Input settings: Range set to 1, 4 · DPI set to 150 DPI · Format set to PNG.
Observed Result
  • The converter skips pages 2, 3, and 5–24, completing extraction in less than 2 seconds.
  • Page 1 is generated as annual-presentation-page-001.png (620 KB).
  • Page 4 is generated as annual-presentation-page-004.png (810 KB).
Download individual images or click "Download All as ZIP" to receive both packaged cleanly.

Troubleshooting & Edge Cases

Password Encryption

Encrypted or password-protected PDFs cannot be rendered until decrypted. Use ZapPebble's Unlock PDF tool first if you have the owner or user password.

300 DPI Memory Requirements

Rendering an A4 page at 300 DPI creates a 2480×3508 pixel canvas (~35 MB of raw uncompressed RGBA pixel buffer in RAM). For documents exceeding 50 pages, use 150 DPI to prevent mobile browser memory pressure.

ZIP File Generation

ZapPebble builds ZIP archives directly in client RAM using an uncompressed local ZIP generator. No external compression utilities or plugins are required.

Zero Server Uploads

Complete Privacy for Confidential Documents

Bank statements, tax filings, legal contracts, and medical records contain sensitive personally identifiable information. Because ZapPebble operates with 100% client-side WebAssembly, your documents never touch a third-party server, database, or logging system.

Frequently Asked Questions

150 dpi is sharp on any screen and keeps files small. Use 300 dpi for printing or zooming into fine text, and 72 dpi for quick thumbnails.
